Vietnam's WTO accession chronology:
- January 11, 2007: Vietnam's WTO membership starts to take effect.
- December 29, 2006: President Bush issued proclamation to extend nondiscriminatory treatment (Normal Trade Relations
Treatment) to the products of Vietnam.
- December 11: Vietnam notified the WTO of its ratification.
- December 9: U.S. Senate passed senate version of H.R. 6111 granting PNTR to Vietnam (79-9). Click here for vote result.
- December 8: U.S. House passed H.R. 6406 granting PNTR to Vietnam (212-184). Click here for vote result.
- November 28: Vietnam's National Assembly ratified its accession package. Vietnam's membership will take effect 30 days after it informs the WTO.
- November 7: The WTO General Council approved Vietnam's membership at a special session in Geneva. Click here for more infomation.
- October 26: The Working Party formally approved Vietnam's accession package.
- October 13: Vietnam concluded all WTO negotiations in Geneva.
- July 31: Senate Finance Committee approved Vietnam PNTR. Click here for vote record [pdf]
- July 27: Senate Finance Committee Markup on Vietnam PNTR.
- July 12: Senate Finance Committee held a hearing on the granting of PNTR for Vietnam.
- June 13: The two PNTR bills for Vietnam were introduced in US Congress.
- May 31: The United States and Vietnam officially signed a bilateral market access agreement.
- May 14: The United States and Vietnam reached an agreement in principle.
Vietnam PNTR bills:
- Vietnam's PNTR legislation in tax-trade package H.R. 6111:
- H.R. 6111 and H.R. 6406 were voted separately in the House and then combined for a single Senate vote as H.R. 6111:
- H.R. 6111: tax component.
- H.R. 6406: trade component (including Vietnam PNTR),
